Perfecting primary school meals

primary school meals

Our priority is to ensure we serve children really tasty primary school meals they can enjoy – and appreciate as being good for them. We also encourage them to discover the wonders of food by trying new dishes and flavours, and help them begin to understand the importance of a healthy diet from an early age.

All the ingredients for perfect menus

Our menus have a rhythm that matches the seasons, and they’re designed to help children develop the confidence to try new dishes – and understand the importance of nutritionally balanced diets all year round.

We have a three-weekly menu rotation that changes twice a year. At the end of each cycle, we ask for feedback from staff, children and parents, and adjust our menus accordingly – ensuring we are in tune with children’s tastes and preferences while providing balanced, healthy and nutritious primary school meals.

We believe in a partnership approach to working with our primary schools. At the start of each menu cycle, we send menus to parents, and attend parents’ evenings to show them first-hand what we do and answer any questions, giving them confidence in our service and offering.

A keen eye on menu uptake

So you can track progress, we produce a monthly report on how many children are eating primary school meals. This means we can monitor uptake with you, and discuss how we can continuously look for new and engaging ways to help children enjoy healthy and nutritious cooked food as part of the Pabulum school meal and dining room experience.

Our primary school meals experience

At Pabulum, we aim to give children more than a meal. We want them to enjoy the wider experience of colours, tastes, smells and textures, in delicious food that’s created with care and served with a smile.

Farm to Fork

We believe in introducing 7-11 year olds to the basics of food provenance, and where their favourite foods really come from. With this in mind, we begin explaining the journey their food takes to reach their plates.

Over 75% of Pabulum’s produce is sourced from the British Isles, and as a professional and responsible catering company, we insist on tracking all of our ingredients from Farm to Fork.

Elvetham Heath Primary School

Case Study

Elvetham Heath is a three-form entry primary school, located in Fleet, Hampshire, rated Outstanding by Ofsted. Headteacher Megan Robinson wanted to find a catering partner that shared her passion for freshly-prepared food and the promotion of healthy eating – all within an inspiring dining environment. Significantly increasing the number of children choosing to eat a school lunch was a priority.

We introduced our full Pabulum Dining Experience in both dining halls at Elvetham Heath, with tablecloths, herbs, freshly baked bread, water and cutlery ready on the tables, and our vibrant branding around the servery areas. Children select their main meal from the counter, before helping themselves to the unlimited salad. After eating their main meal they return to our dedicated stations for their choice of dessert.

“Choosing Pabulum as our caterer partner is the best decision I have made for a long time. I cannot believe the huge difference it has made to our school – the number of meals has increased hugely, from an average of 290 per day to over 400 per day in just a few weeks!”
